Winner is GeneratePress

Do you like to cut to the chase? OK, here you go. Are you searching for a well-supported, fast, mobile responsive, SEO friendly, WordPress theme created by an exceptionally talented developer? Look no further, the winner is GeneratePress.

Many years ago, when I retired from medical practice, personal and small business websites weren’t much of a thing. Just a few years later, when I ventured into network marketing having an online presence gave me a leg up.

So, how do you create a website? Let me count the ways… seriously, there are dozens of website creation tools. Over the years, I built multiple sites with RapidWeaver and later, WordPress Genesis. RapidWeaver was beautiful and comfortable. Genesis was more profound and powerful.

There was a time when I had lots of websites, these days I have just three, all neglected for years. I’ve even had complaints from a few mobile users about how nasty my websites look on their iPhones. Ends up, my Genesis theme, Prose, is no longer sold by StudioPress. Think about that, I was still using a theme that was so old that an excellent developer bailed. Message received, it was apparently way past time for an update.

I decided to stick with WordPress. When you think about choosing a WordPress theme, do you worry about writing code? Don’t, I’m the furthest thing from a web guru you’ll ever meet. Complicated doesn’t work for me, I’m a point and click guy. If I can do it, so can you.

The first thing I noticed when I re-immersed myself in WordPress was that most of the community was talking non-stop about Page Builders, primarily, Beaver Builder, Divvy and Elementor. Page builders are supposed to make website creation more accessible, but they cost you every year. That said, I loved the concept of visually designing a website. Although I’d never played with it, WordPress has a native ‘Customizer,’ that previews changes as you make them. From my vantage, Customizer looked like a mini-page builder. My next question was, "Is there a theme that maximizes the potential benefits of Customizer?" My needs are simple, I set my sights on a no-fuss solution. I was sure that a clean, modern theme, with big text and lots of whitespaces, was out there, somewhere. Where to start?

Searching with keywords was a complete waste of my time. Every theme brags they’re fast, lightweight, SEO-friendly and mobile responsive. So, back to fundamentals, I visited the ‘WordPress Theme Directory,’ clicked on Popular and GeneratePress caught my eye. The next thing I noticed was impressive reviews and hundreds of five-star ratings. Clearly, it was time to visit the GeneratePress website to learn more.

The GeneratePress website’s ‘Site Library’ showed off the theme’s flexibility. The activity in their ‘Support Forum’ was impressive as was their documentation.

GeneratePress features include:

  • 9 widget areas
  • 5 navigation positions
  • 5 sidebar layouts
  • dropdown menus (click or hover)
  • and a back to top button.

My websites are simple: I used a single widget area, one navigation position and the default sidebar layout. I changed a couple of fonts and font sizes. Following step-by-step instructions, I altered the header and primary navigation. My sites are now easier to read and to navigate. They’re also mobile responsive and faster. Some people love bespoke Savile Row suits. I’ve never liked costumes. That’s why I’m delighted with GeneratePress’ off-the-rack, style and functionality. In the future, I may customize my sites, but for now, I’m happy to have my sites working again, better than ever.

I’ve almost finished weeding the network marketing crud out of this site. Please comment if you discover more. I’ve found the Broken Link Checker plugin useful. Way back when, I used YOAST SEO Premium, but had a significant problem and I haven’t wanted to try it again. This go-around I’m using The SEO Framework which suits my needs perfectly.

In a matter of minutes, I purchased the GeneratePress premium version GP Premium. For $49.95 US I got:

  • a plugin that upgrades GeneratePress’ flexibility
  • all premium modules
  • full access to the Site Library
  • unlimited websites
  • 1 year of updates & support
  • 40% renewal discount
  • 30-day money back guarantee.

Thanks to GeneratePress, I’ll be able to play with new designs whenever I want to and it will only cost me about $30 a year. Compare that to the page builders.

Finally, here’s a special treat for making it all the way to the end:
